Technology in Star Trek
From Science Fiction to Science Fact
When Star Trek first premiered in 1966, many of the technologies seen aboard the USS Enterprise seemed impossible. Devices such as handheld communicators, tablet computers, video conferencing, voice-activated computers, universal translators, medical scanners, and wearable technology were considered nothing more than imaginative science fiction.
Today, many of these once-fictional concepts have become part of our everyday lives. Cell phones function much like communicators, tablets have replaced paper manuals, smartwatches provide instant communication and health monitoring, video calls connect people around the world, and artificial intelligence powers voice assistants capable of answering questions and controlling our homes. Scientists and engineers continue to develop technologies inspired by the vision of Star Trek.
Our display features a comparison of the groundbreaking technology introduced in Star Trek alongside its real-world modern equivalent, demonstrating how the series inspired generations of innovators, engineers, scientists, and inventors to turn imagination into reality.
New for this year, we have expanded and upgraded this exhibit with a 4-foot-wide by 3-foot-high display board featuring additional examples of Star Trek technology and the remarkable advancements that have become reality. This enhanced display provides visitors with an even more comprehensive look at how Star Trek has influenced technological innovation over the past six decades.
As Gene Roddenberry envisioned, today's science fiction often becomes tomorrow's science fact.

Star Trek: Communications Earpiece vs. Today: Bluetooth EarpieceLieutenant Uhura often used a wireless earpiece in her job as the Enterprise’s communications officer. The device's transmission range is difficult to assess, as Uhura seldom left her post. Today’s Bluetooth headsets look to be lighter and more comfortable to wear, and some Bluetooth devices have a range of up to 100 meters. PADD (Personal Access Display Device)
Century technology that tops its fictional Star Trek counterpart, at least aesthetically. A PADD (Personal Access Display Device) was a handheld computer capable of performing many mundane Starfleet tasks, including filing diagnostic reports and duty rosters. Like the iPhone, it had a minimalist interface with a touchscreen and maybe an external button or two. The iPhone is certainly better looking, but it isn't nearly as rugged. A PADD could endure a 35-meter drop and keep on ticking; don’t try that with your iPhone.
